Configuring Scanners and MSR's to send STX / ETX

Modified on Thu, 22 Sep, 2022 at 1:01 PM

Overview

If you're using a barcode scanner or an MSR with Cloud Retailer you need to configure those devices to send an STX character before it sends data and an ETX character afterward in order to get it to work with Cloud Retailer.  With barcode scanners, this may not be required but it is if you want to use the enhanced features of the software.  Also, note that magnetic stripe readers (MSRs) are not used to process credit cards with CR, you must use an integrated payment terminal BUT they can be used for driver's license scanning.

Procedure

With Magtek MSRs you should use their configuration utility and then load the CR Magtek.txt file
If they are Dynamags then use the CR MSR-Dynamag.txt file.

If you are configuring the barcode scanner using 123Scan manually, the code for STX is 1002, and for ETX it is 1003.

Symbol LS2208
Use the 123Scan app and load the attached "Config File_LS2208" file to the scanner

Zebra DS 8178 SR
Use the 123Scan app and load the attached "CONFIG FILE_DS8178_CLOUDRETAILER-2021.03.18.SCNCFG" file to the scanner

Honeywell 1300G
Print the HONEYWELL 1300G-STX-ETX.PDF file that is attached below and scan the barcodes.

Honeywell Xenon 1900
Use the EZConfig app to load the .EXM config file attached to this page.  Alternatively, if you've manually programmed the scanner to send STX and ETX commands you will also need to scan the XENON1900.pdf barcode attached to this page.

Honeywell Xenon 1902

Use the 2d barcode STX ETX Xenon 1902.pdf. If for some reason this doesn't work, make sure that Settings -  Interface - Communications - USB interface - USB PC Keyboard is selected
Settings -  Interface - Keyboard Wedge - Turbo is turned on and CTRL X-mode is on

Honeywell / Hand Held Products 4600R - use the attached PDF.  NOTE**** old versions of this scanner are not supported by Cloud Retailer and will need to be replaced.  50-50 chance you'll get these to work.

Intermec SG20 Bluetooth

Intermec SG20 Tethered
Use the Intermec EasySet application and load the attached file into the scanner.

With barcode scanners also configure UPCE and UPCA to match how your product codes are set up and TEST (IE, trim leading digits and or check digits).

==================

A few specific examples of what STX/ETX does, if enabled, with your scanner is that anytime in the POS you can scan a:

  • Drivers license
  • Sales transaction receipt's barcode
  • Customer loyalty card
  • Employee badge barcode
  • A POS function command
  • On the payment / tender window
  • On the window where it tells you how much change is owed
  • To check a gift card balance
  • The serial number of a product you want to return
  • If a product is not in the system special functionality fires off - see this article
